Our team utilizes powerful analytical tools and insights to help identify fast growing fitness trends and opportunities in the market. We use these reports to advise our clients on what segments of the fitness industry have the best market opportunity. We can create customized plans or simply point you in the right direction so your entry into becoming a Fitness Professional is quick and easy.
The primary focus of Fitness Professionals is to assist you in your decision to start a thriving fitness business. We also want to help you determine if you want to emphasize working with clients one-on-one (personal training) or leading groups (group fitness) or both. In addition, there is a great deal of confusion in the industry about "certification" so we want to clear up the distinction of Certification vs Licensing as most folks misuse the terms and as a current or future professional, understanding the terminology to use the terms correctly reflects well on you to your clients.
We have also provided links for obtaining insurance for your new business as well as briefly describing the differences between starting your business as a DBA, LLC or S-Corp. This information should help guide you along the process to sound foundation for your new venture. And, we are also available to field any other questions that may come up in your journey to become an outstanding and profitable Fitness Professional.
Rebounding is one of the fastest growing segments in the Fitness Industry as a whole. Contact us today to learn more about how to get started in the fast growing Rebound Industry.
The basic difference to make this more clear is:
1) Certifications are preferably issued by 3rd party organizations (see below) that include a certificate that the person being certified has a basic minimum understanding of the particular emphasis they seek to achieve and pass an Exam. These must be maintained by the holder usually every 2 years by taking the exam again or by taking accredited classes prior to the end of the certificate date.
2) Manufactures issue licenses (usually in the form of a certificate) to use their name and have training available to get instructors to teach their classes as they outline their programs, but it does not involve an Exam. These programs often (not always) have continuing education credits (CE or CEU) that can be used to maintain the 3rd party organizational Certification requirements (above). Most manufactures who have programs require that participants are Certified as Group Fitness or Personal Training if their program is not accredited.
Examples:
CERTIFICATION:
Group Fitness Certification is required to obtain the Kangoo Jumps License, but not for Zumba or Spin.
This 3rd party certification from ACE, ACSM, ISSA, ACSM and others (...see the list below this message) and are NOT affiliated with the programs, products or the manufacture. These organizations create Certifications in various fitness categories.
To start a class for jumping or rebounding does NOT require this certification, but it is highly recommended that you contact one of the many organizations that offer Group Fitness Certification and take their exam as it can offer many additional benefits (like obtaining insurance) as an instructor. If you start an independent group class, you can always later decide to get your license from the manufacture if you feel that will help your business stand apart from others.
LICENSING:
Zumba, Spin and Kangoo are examples of manufactures or businesses that have in-house programs that they develop and have specific trainers to provide training for instructors to teach the class. These manufactures may give a certificate that is a license to use their name...but they are NOT necessarily certification programs, but license programs. These licenses generally need to be re-issued every 2 years or so.
A legal issue to consider is the use of the name. That is why the manufactures offer licenses to use their name in your business...so if you are licensed by a manufacturer, you can use the name of the manufacturer in your class. If you are independent (whether GF Certified or not), then you do NOT have the right to use the name in your business

YEARLY AVERAGE SALARY (dependent on geographical location in USA)
Most often Group Fitness Instructors perform their jobs on a Part-Time basis where Personal Trainers are often Full-Time so the compensation will reflect that in most cases.
According to Salary.com:
The average annual Group Fitness Instructor salary is estimated to be approximately $39563 per year. The majority pay is between $29414 to $54282 per year.
The base salary for a Personal Trainer ranges from $47,353 to $80,631 with the average base salary of $65,631.
Many people start out working as an employee of a gym or trainer group while they build their experience and resume while also amassing a list of clientele or loyal participants. After a period of time, many will venture on their own to work with a studio gym or start a gym or training group of their own.
Starting a DBA, LLC or S-Corp
DBA is short for “doing business as.” A DBA is an official fictitious name, assumed name or trade name that allows you to operate your business under a name other than your legal name.
Since a DBA is basically a nickname and not a business structure, it does not provide the same legal protections you would receive from an LLC or any other business structure.
An LLC, or limited liability company, is a legal business structure. LLCs protect the owner’s personal assets from the company’s debts. An LLC is treated as a separate entity from the owner(s), creating a financial barrier between them and the company.
Limited liability protection is one of the main reasons small businesses choose to operate as an LLC.
As an LLC, you operate your business under the name of your LLC, and you must establish a separate business bank account and use your company name when interacting with clients or customers.
An S-corp is a tax classification not a legal business structure. Both LLCs and corporations can be taxed as an S-corp. An S-corp doesn’t pay corporate income tax such as a traditional C-corp. does. Instead, company profits pass through to owners’ personal tax returns.
A Fitness Professional is best served by an LLC to protect personal assets from business liabilities. That is not to say that starting with a DBA to begin your practice and develop a clientele before starting an LLC is a bad idea, just don't keep it that way once you start making money.
